New Mexico Partnership for Equitable Climate Planning & Policy

New Mexico Pueblos, Community organizations and Higher learning institutions Working Together to Lead Climate Solutions

About

New Mexico’s Pueblo Peoples have thrived along the Rio Grande River for thousands of years. Across the mesas and mountains of the Santa Fe to Taos region, the Eight Northern Pueblos’ traditional ecological knowledge and regenerative systems increasingly shape how regional communities are addressing climate challenges.

The New Mexico Partnership for Equitable Climate Planning & Policy (NMP) partners bring together tribal leaders, residents, government agencies at all levels (Tribal, State, etc), higher education institutions, and nonprofit organizations to equip young Native leaders as environmental planners and advocates. The Partnership is building and launching a Cohort for Resilient Futures, offering a 10 month fellowship to young people ages 18-35 from the Eight Northern Pueblos.

We’re working to create a future where Pueblo communities take the lead in creating solutions for today and for generations to come.

Our Approach

At the heart of our work is the P.L.A.C.E.S. Framework, developed by the Indigenous Design and Planning Institute (iD+Pi) under the leadership of Dr. Ted Jojola (Isleta Pueblo).

“Together, we hope to reclaim our abilities to shape and mold our communities in our way, for the betterment of everyone.”

– Dr. Ted Jojola

The Framework

P.L.A.C.E.S. is a community organizing framework that reflects Native American principles and incorporates Population, Land Use/Tenure, Assets, Community Engagement, Empowerment, and Storytelling. This unique approach ensures that climate solutions are culturally relevant, equitable, and led by the people most affected.
